USA players join Barbados Tridents training camp

American players training with Barbados Tridents

Five USA national team players have joined the Barbados Tridents training camp this week as part of their own preparation ahead of the 2016 World Twenty20 Qualifier in Ireland next month.

Wicket-keeper Steven Taylor had previously been offered a trial with Tridents to compete for a development contract as part of an opportunity facilitated for him, four Canada players and a Bermuda player through the ICC Americas office.

Apart from Taylor though, four other USA players including Japen Patel, Adil Bhatti, Jasdeep Singh and T20 captain Muhammad Ghous travelled to Barbados at their own expense to train with the Tridents after receiving an invitation from their coach Robin Singh, who has worked with USA national teams on a contract basis since 2011. In addition to the national team players, local Washington Cricket League player Mohammad Kamran has also travelled to Barbados. According to sources, Washington Cricket League president and former USA team manager Shoaib Ahmed helped facilitate the opportunity for all of the players through Robin.

The USACA had announced a pre-World T20 training camp in Jamaica from June 19 to 21, but five USA players will be in Barbados from June 15 to 22 after receiving indications that yet another USACA organised camp for Jamaica had fallen through. Patel said on Monday from Barbados that the players were contacted only a week ago for the offer of going to Barbados, but quickly rearranged plans and secured sponsors to pay for their individual flights and hotel costs in order to make the trip possible. He hopes it will provide them with the intense preparation they need to do well in Ireland.

"The main thing I want to get out of this is fitness," Patel told ESPNcricinfo. "I want to make sure that I'm match-fit since we haven't been playing any cricket on turf. So I'm just looking to get more turf practice and getting in the groove of playing a lot of cricket since we're expected to perform in back-to-back games in Ireland. This camp will help get us back in the mindset of thinking about cricket everyday instead of being weekend cricketers."

Patel said his initial expectations were that the USA players were only going to observe the Tridents training sessions and then at the conclusion would have their own separate sessions with Robin. However, he says he was thrilled that the Tridents team management has fully integrated all of the USA players into their daily routine.

"I like the fact that we are actually involved with their day-to-day camp activities and their programs in addition to the training," Patel said. "It has been good so far because all of the senior players are treating us like we are part of the camp. Every time they see something they come up to us and tell us how to fix it and how to go about things. The first day was a really good experience. Guys like [Kieron] Pollard, Dwayne Smith, Ravi Rampaul and everyone else there has been very helpful. They are treating us like they are our mentors. We are willing to learn and they are willing to offer.

"In the USA, yes we practice but we don't practice the right way. Over here, they are on point. Whatever they are going to focus on in the match, that's what they practice. So for bowlers, they focus more on bowling yorkers or whatever their role is in the match whereas back in the USA, you just come in and bowl normally. Here it is a higher level and you are facing batsmen with higher skills. When I bowl to someone like Pollard, I have to think about where he is trying to hit and my job is to think about what ball I want to try to bowl without him hitting me. So that level of thinking can only happen when you bowl to somebody with that skillset."

USA open their World T20 Qualifier campaign on July 10 against Nepal in Belfast. Nepal have been having extended preparation in India after their home facilities were damaged following a major earthquake on April 25. In the past, USA have been undone by lack of preparation rather than lack of talent but Patel believes this experience in Barbados may give the handful of USA players a much-needed lift to lay the platform for success in the qualifiers.

"For me this is a very good confidence-booster because this was a camp where when I first came in I expected to see how far away I am from playing at that level," he said. "After coming here and hearing the feedback, I think it just requires a little bit of hard work so I'm willing to put that in and hopefully I'm able to turn that into performances in Ireland. There's a few adjustments in T20 which I am expecting to get out of this. How to approach and build my innings, bowling wise how to read a batsman. Those are the things I'm looking to learn rather than any technical work. So far it's been more than what I expected."

Liverpool linked with Coates

Liverpool linked with promising central defender to replace Sebastian Coates

anfield Liverpool linked with promising central defender to replace Sebastian Coates
Liverpool are weighing up a bid for Charlton teenager Joe Gomez as a replacement for the soon-to-be-offloaded Sebastian Coates.
With Sunderland seemingly set to pay £4million to make Coates’ loan last season into a permanent deal, the Reds are on the lookout for cover at centre-back.
Press Association Sport understands Gomez, aged 18, is of interest and while no formal offer has yet been made, the club believe there is a possibility of signing the England Under-19 defender for about £3.5m.
Liverpool currently have four senior central defenders in Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho, last summer’s £20m arrival Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure.
Skrtel, who is out of contract in a year’s time, is stalling over the terms of a new deal offered towards the end of last season while the 34-year-old Toure, whose new 12-month extension takes him to next summer, is not a long-term option.
Liverpool also have Tiago Ilori, a 22-year-old signed from Sporting Lisbon in 2013 but who has yet to make a first-team appearance and has spent loan spells at Granada and Bordeaux.
Gomez, whose breakthrough season in the SkyBet Championship last term saw him make 24 appearances, is viewed as a long-term prospect and – like Ilori – would more than likely be loaned out for more experience.
Liverpool are keen to strengthen their defense further with the addition of a right-back after Glen Johnson’s contract was not renewed.
With a second knee operation ruling out Jon Flanagan until late in the year, manager Brendan Rodgers’ current options are Spaniard Javier Manquillo, halfway through a two-year loan from Atletico Madrid but who failed to convince last season, and the 22-year-old Andre Wisdom, who has spent the previous two campaigns on loan at Derby and West Brom and has just signed a new four-year deal.
A £10m bid for Southampton’s England right-back Nathaniel Clyne was rejected late last month and as yet Liverpool have not returned with an improved offer, although the 24-year-old remains their main target for that position.
In terms of outgoings the club remain insistent Raheem Sterling, who turned down a £100,000-a-week contract in January, is not for sale after turning down a £30m offer from Manchester City last week.
Reports suggest City will return with an improved bid of £40m and while even that falls at least £10m short of Liverpool’s valuation they are not of the mindset to sell the 20-year-old England forward.
They have adopted a similar robust stance to when Arsenal tried to lure Luis Suarez away with a cheeky £40m plus £1 bid in 2013 as Sterling still has two years left on his contract, despite his apparent unhappiness.
Meanwhile, the search continues to replace Rodgers’ backroom staff after assistant manager Colin Pascoe was sacked and coach Mike Marsh did not have his contract renewed.
No appointments are imminent but with pre-season just three weeks away the process is expected to advance in the next fortnight.

When last did Jamaica beat Paraguay?

Jamaica seek third consecutive win over Paraguay

Jamaica have won their last two matches, both friendlies, against Paraguay.
And the Reggae Boyz believe they can go for their third straight when they meet again in the Copa America on Monday, June 16 at Antofagasta in Chile.
In their last match-up on July 9, 2003 at the National Stadium, Richard Langley and Darren Byfield netted in the 13th and 30th minutes respectively in the 2-0 win.
Before that the Reggae Boyz were impressive in the 3-0 victory on March 31, 1999 also at the National Stadium.
Marcus Gayle, Theodore Whitmore, and David Johnson were on target for Rene Simoes' Boyz.
Jamaica are ranked 65th in the world, compared to Paraguay who are number 85.

Australia extend unbeaten streak to 14 matches

Australia unbeaten since 2010 against the West Indies

BY PAUL BURROWES

Australia have now won their 21st Test in the West Indies, after their recent 2-0 sweep in the Caribbean.
Twenty-four-year-old right-arm fast medium bowler Josh Hazlewood was player of the series, topping with 12 wickets.
Ranked number 27 in the world, Hazlewood took five in the first Test at Windsor Park and seven in the second Test at Sabina Park.
The Australians have played 50 Tests in the Caribbean, with 15 drawn and 14 won by the West Indies.
The wins have also extended Australians unbeaten Test run against the West Indies to 14, with only three of the matches drawn.
Steven Smith, Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey, and Ricky Ponting have been the leading run-getting over the 10 years that the Aussies have been unbeaten against the West Indies.

Man U complete Depay signing

Official: United complete Depay signing

Manchester United have formally completed the signing of Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.
United agreed a £31million deal with the Dutch club for the 21-year-old winger last month.
United have now confirmed Depay has signed a four-year contract at Old Trafford with the option to extend for a further year.
Depay was the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season, scoring 22 goals in 30 games to help PSV to the title.
The move reunites the Holland international with his former national boss Louis van Gaal.
Depay, who was also linked with Liverpool, told the club's website, www.manutd.com: "This is a dream come true for me. To play for the biggest club in the world and also to have the chance to work with someone who I believe is the best manager in the world, Louis van Gaal.
"I have great belief in my ability and I work hard to strive to achieve my dreams.
"I have been at PSV Eindhoven since I was 12 years old and I would like to thank them for everything. It was a great moment when we won the league and I was so happy to be part of that.
"This is now a new chapter in my life and one that I am looking forward to."
Depay broke into the PSV side in 2011 and went on to make 124 senior appearances for the club, scoring 50 goals in total. He has scored three times in 16 games for Holland and was part of Van Gaal's squad at the 2014 World Cup.
United manager Van Gaal said: "I know Memphis well from our time working together in the Netherlands national team. He is a young versatile player who has the ability to play in a number of different positions.
"It will take time for Memphis to get used to the rhythm of the Premier League but I have no doubt that he has the potential to become a great footballer for this club and he is at the right club to continue the good work he has done so far."
Depay does not appear to be lacking in confidence, believing he is capable of becoming a United great.
Asked how much he wanted to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo, Depay told MUTV: "I'm going to let my feet speak. I hope I can develop here in the Premier League and I hope I can be like those great legends one time in my career.
"I'm going to work hard, so let's see. I believe I can be a great player for Manchester United."

Falcao waves goodbye to Man United

Falcao waves goodbye to Man Utd

Nowgoal.com: Falcao waves goodbye to Man Utd
The Colombian made a point of acknowledging the home support as he left the field on 61 minutes as he edges towards the end of his lucrative one-year loan from Monaco
Radamel Falcao has seemingly said his final farewell to Manchester United, waving to sections of the Old Trafford crowd as he was substituted against Arsenal.
The Colombian cut a frustrated figure as he left the field after another fruitless display but made a point of acknowledging the home fans before heading down the tunnel.
It is unclear whether Old Trafford rose to applaud Falcao's efforts against Arsenal or the imminent arrival of Robin van Persie, who has struggled for form and fitness this season and could also leave this summer.
Falcao arrived at United on a lucrative one-year loan deal from Monaco last summer but has failed to make a significant impact this season, scoring just four goals in 29 appearances in all competitions.
United have an option to sign the 29-year-old for £43.5 million (€60m) this summer but are highly unlikely to exercise it.

Ancelotti to return to Milan

Ancelotti set to return to Milan

Nowgoal.com: Ancelotti set to return to Milan
The Italian, who was sacked by Real Madrid last week, is set to decide on Wednesday whether to rejoin the Rossoneri
Paris Saint-Germain ace Thiago Silva believes that there is a strong possibility of Carlo Ancelotti returning to AC Milan.
Ancelotti was sacked by Real Madrid last week and promptly announced that he would be taking a year out of the game to recover from a back operation he will undergo in Canada this summer.
However, AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi had sent club CEO Adriano Galliani to the Spanish capital and is alleged to have tried to persuade Ancelotti to rejoin the Rossoneri, whom the 55-year-old coached between 2001 and 2009.
Ancelotti is expected to make a decision on his future on Wednesday and Thiago Silva suspects his former coach will end up back at San Siro.
"I believe that with the two people behind this club, Galliani and Berlusconi, there is a good chance that Ancelotti will return to AC Milan," the ex-Rossoneri centre-half told Sky Sport Italia.
"A great club deserves a great coach and Ancelotti is a great coach. I am confident that a solution can be found."
Thiago Silva played under Ancelotti twice during his career, first with Milan and subsequently with PSG.
